Family: Malvaceae Scientific name: Malvastrum americanum Description: Plant Form: Erect annual or perennial herb or shrub. Size: Up to 1 m tall. Stem: Densely covered in hairs. Sometimes woody at base. Leaves: Oval to lance-shaped, 1-6 cm long, with pointed or rounded end and with rounded or sharp toothed edges. With radiating hairs. Flowers: Yellow or orange, bowl-shaped, up to 1.5 cm across, with hairy supporting bracts. Fruit and Seeds: Dry with 7 or 8 segments which are slightly hairy on one side. Seeds have a leathery coat. Habitat: Urban bushland, parks, disturbed areas, grasslands, forests. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from Sida (Sida species) and Prickly malvastrum (Malvastrum coromandelianum) by lacking awns on fruit.
